Programme

Street Dreamz (3 minutes, 2008, Ottawa, ON)
Deniz Berkin

A surreal, experimental fable about two strangers and their late night encounter. Strange, bizarre and sweet, Street Dreamz shows that romantic moments still exist in the urban jungle once the sun goes down.

Dames (10 minutes, 1995, Winnipeg, MB)
Maureen Devanik Butterfield

This smoky tale shows a conspiracy to kill a stereotype.

Introduction a L’Usure: R-10 (2 minutes, 2009, Montreal, QC)
Pierre Luc Gouin

Introduction à l'Usure : R-10 (Introduction to Degradation: R-10) is the first chapter in a series of films on the theme of L'usure (wearing down). L'usure is an essay on changes: changes through time, manipulation, and perception. Degradation is everywhere and it is constant; nothing escapes it. In this introduction, Kodak color reversal film 3383 is treated with Kodak R-10 bleach. Colors and shapes of the pre-exposed film are revealed to create an ever-changing abstract landscape.

Lake Ontario (in my head) (5 minutes, 2006, Ottawa, ON)
Penny McCann

A meditative look at a mutable and hypnotic horizon. Grainy Super 8 imagery, optically printed 16mm footage and an atmospheric soundtrack evoke the stillness of mind reached when standing before expansive sky and water.

Loving the Bomb (4 minutes, 2009, Winnipeg, MB)
Alison Davis

Atomic positive propaganda and historical accounts of nuclear explosions infiltrate the daily existence of a family living in a small town supported by atomic bomb production. Loving the Bomb interweaves the accounts of scientists and soldiers involved in nuclear weapons testing and atomic positive propaganda with the lives of a family living in a town supported by the production of nuclear arms to create a portrait of a community that is harmed by, yet reliant upon, this contentious industry.

1 to 8 (5 minutes, 2008, Montreal, QC)
Amy Schwartz

A series of 30-second sequences, all based on the same original frames of super 8mm film and re-worked on the optical printer using different rhythms and methods. A play on light and colour.

Brothers (13 minutes, 1998, Winnipeg, MB)
Paul Suderman

Two brothers live in an apartment, which they never leave. The older brother uses the image of their absent father to keep the younger brother in a state of ignorance about the outside world. On day, however, the younger brother’s curiosity gets the better of him, and the older brother’s manipulations are laid bare.

Alone (1 minute, 2008, Victoria, BC)
Scott Amos

A fear and worry of mine. On celluloid. Shot on 16mm film and hand-processed. Initially created and screened on 16mm with live music performed by Rozalind MacPhail for MediaNet’s One-Minute Challenge. This is a digitized version with a re-recorded soundtrack.

F-ck It! (5 minutes, 2000, Winnipeg, MB)
Tammy Jones

F-ck It! Is a film about obsession and the fragmentation of soul. A woman becomes obsessed with waiting for her phone to ring.

Isobel’s Journey to the Underworld (9 minutes, 2007, Victoria, BC)
David Arseneau

Isobel’s Quest to the UnderWorld is a hopeless romanticism tale
loosely based on the poem Holy Sonnet 10, Death Be Not Proud by John Donne. A heart broken young woman visits the UnderWorld to find her dead lover.
