This hands-on course follows the director’s journey from preparation to the screen with an in-depth focus on the director-actor collaboration. Participants will learn principles and methods that will provide the conditions for the actor to do his or her best work during the different stages of production, from auditioning to filming. Actors of varying levels will be invited to partake in the exercises, including mock auditions and scene work.
Topics include:
· Becoming a trustworthy director.
· Developing a constructive actor-director relationship.
· Recognizing “talent” and good acting.
· Understanding the actor’s process and what they need from the director.
· Analyzing the script with your actors’ needs in mind.
· Defining and communicating your vision to your actors.
· Getting the most out of the auditioning process.
· Working with a casting director and talent agencies.
· Assembling the best cast.
· Using rehearsals effectively.
· Avoiding/unlearning common mistakes directors make.
· Tips on working with:
o Actors who are more experienced than you.
o Actors with limited or no previous training and/or experience.
o Theatre actors with limited or no previous camera experience.
o Children actors.
About the Instructor:
Ana de Lara is a film director and professional actor, with over 12 years experience as an acting instructor. She has written, directed, and produced four award-winning short films: Near Silence (Best Short Fiction Award, 2011 Vancouver Women in Film Festival), Bamboozle (1st Place Jury Prize, 2009 Vancouver Asian Film Festival), In Control (Jury Prize Best Children's Film, 2008 Commffest Film Festival), and First Winter Last (Jury Prize Best Canadian Fiction, 2008 CBC RCI Migrations Competition). Her films have screened at numerous festivals including the Rhode Island Independent Film Festival and the Montreal World Film Festival.
Ana's acting credits include roles in Freshman's Wharf (Best Web Series, 2011 Leo Award), Tumbling After (Jury Prize, 2008 Waterford Film Festival, Ireland), and Terminal City (Best Dramatic Series, 2006 Leo Award.) She has taught acting to youth and adults at the Screen Actors Studio, Pacific Film and New Media Academy, and the Victoria Motion Picture School.
