One of Canada's foremost experimental filmmakers Deco Dawson will be demonstrating various experimental techniques with Bolex cameras and 16mm film.
The workshop will deal with in-camera effects using the 16mm Bolex camera.
The class will included experimental techniques for the camera but will also particularly focus on the role of the director/filmmaker as a one man machine.
Armed with only a Bolex and one light, perhaps two, Deco Dawson will show you how you can be your own loader, operator, focus puller, lighting designer, special effects creator and director all at the same time! Too often filmmaking is about nervously hoping your crew things you know what you are talking about. With this workshop Deco will show you everything you need to know to be a one man crew, making your own films on your own terms.
During the workshop advanced techniques as applicable will be taught such as: the principles and applications behind fast and slow motion photography, macro photography, multiple exposures, variable shutter manipulation, pixelation, time-lapse, cross fading, dissolves and the creative uses of each of these techniques. Participants will be shown clips of these techniques from films and will set out to understand and replicate the effects in the studio. Select workshop footage will processed on site by Scott Amos and viewed by the end of the class.
