Michael Giampa is a graduate of the “Video-Clerk-Turned-Professional-Screenwriter” School. Since then he’s penned a produced feature (Johnny Tootall starring Adam Beach), has optioned or been commissioned to write over a dozen more and currently has an action/drama Throwing Thumbs in pre-production with director Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin).

Using one of his own screenplays, Michael will walk students through the scripting process from beginning to end. The two-day course (spread over two weekends) will cover what occurs in the scriptwriting process from inception to rewrites and beyond. Whether they want to learn how to get a movie idea from head to page or are curious about attempting it as a career, this how-to overview of the ins and outs of screenwriting will prove informative.

Day One will cover the basic components of a screenplay (format, three act structure, story, plotting, character and theme) then delve deeper into the anatomy of a scene (story beats, genre adherence/subversion, dialogue, set up, reversals and payoff), the uniqueness of the screenplay narrative and how to blend story with message while still aiming to entertain.

Day Two will dig into the prep required before a screenplay is written and what happens with it after, such as writing beat sheets, one pages, outlines and character bios as well as how to play well with producers, story editors and eventually a director. Finally the business of a screenwriter (contracts to copyright) will relay what is required to protect yourself and the screenplay you worked hard to create.
