2.b. Do I need to be a member?
There are oodles of events and programs offered by CineVic that are open to the public. These activities are posted on our website and/or in the papers. A more direct route of information is our tri-weekly email that goes out to our membership and is accessible to Level 1 members for a flat $20/fiscal year rate. The email also includes local to international opportunities such as competitions, grants, festival submissions, casting/crew calls and so on. It is good to note that level 2 and 3 members receive member prices on workshops, competitions and other events that are a significant discount compared to the cost of membership.
2.c. How do I become a member?
Prospective members first complete new membership form (write office@cinevic.ca or contact CineVic for hardcopy)
Following that, interested persons contribute the required volunteer hours.
Level 2 members are required to contribute 5 hours of time toward the co-op or pay an additional $50. Level 3 members need to fulfill 7.5 hours of volunteer time toward the co-op or pay an additional $75 before they pay the membership fee and are approved for membership; thereby granted full access to CineVic equipment.

Upon completion of volunteer time New Members are approved by the Board of Directors and initiated into the Society.

Every event CineVic hosts needs support, members are welcome to present a workshop to the membership around their area of expertise, plan a workshop or seminar inviting a professional to facilitate, or there are plenty of dirty jobs around the office you can resort to.
Please contact the Community Liaison regarding your areas of interest. All volunteer time must be accurately recorded with the office to be counted toward membership or credit with date, times and description.
2.f. What do you mean by "Industry Discounts"?
Level 2 and 3 members currently receive the following discounts:
• 20% off on Kodak film stock
• 25% off Rainmaker services including lab, telecine, post and dubbing services.
Please contact the office to place orders as they must be initiated through the Society.
3.ABOUT EQUIPMENT
3.a. What equipment do you have?
Check our Equipment Page for details.
3.b. Can I get so-and-so to rent equipment for me?
At non-member prices anyone can rent equipment as long as they demonstrate an aptitude with the gear they are borrowing.
To rent at member prices the Producer or Director with ‘creative control’ must be the one to rent the equipment and also must demonstrate an aptitude with its operation and care.
‘Creative Control’ refers to the person who has final say over the project. A commercial project that hires you ultimately has the final say about the project they are buying. Any project that gives you final say has given you creative control. We operate under this standard as put forward by the Canada Council for the Arts.
3.c. What post-production facilities do you have?
An Intel Mac Pro system equipped with Final Cut Sudio 2 equiped with a Blackmagic Decklink HD Extreme Card is the central editing suite. For traditional 16mm editors we can provide an eight-plate Steenbeck, neg cutting/conforming gear and some Super 8 abilities.
3.d. Can I sell you some of my equipment?
Depends. Contact our equipment coordinator.

Ask at the office about hand processing your own film.
4.e. How can I get my idea produced?
You take some magic fairy dust…
Really though, you need to find out how to put together a treatment and propose you idea to a producer. Or, subsequently learn how to produce. We don’t recommend that you take on both writing and producing because it becomes easy to lose one’s mind that way. CineVic often offers writing and producing workshops and has an ongoing (writers group) available to writers wishing to workshop scripts for production. The Victoria Independent Film and Video Festival also offers seminars during the festival on pitching ideas to broadcasters. Check out their site (www.vifvf.com)
4.f. Where can I get some film transferred to video?
There are two roads you can go for getting film onto video: consumer and professional.
There are many labs and mini-labs around Victoria who can do a consumer level transfer of your home movie. Pick up a phonebook. They typically charge $.20/ft. You can buy a DIY kit from London Drugs for about $50 if you still have your film projector and this will do slides as well. Be warned that many labs use this same kit and their projectors aren't always that delicate with your film. If you are worried or if your film is brittle and/or over 25 years old, you may want to grill the front desk person first before you hand over your precious memories.
Professional transfers are of a much higher quality and are much much more expensive. Pro labs charge as much as $350/hour for their lowest quality transfers and that's by their hour not by your film's running time and always with at least a minimum of a half-hour charge. You can get rates from the labs themselves. Here are a few we use:

4.n. Who makes optical soundtracks?
Up until recently nobody west of Toronto or North of Los Angeles made 16mm optical soundtracks. Recently we have heard that someone is doing 16mm optical soundtracks in Seattle. However, we have no other information on that at this time.
We have been sending our optical prints to Toronto as shipping across borders can sometimes be problematic and some labs in L.A. use a "35/32B wind" system to make 16mm optical prints that is not supported by any lab in Canada.
